Palak Dal Recipe

Palak Dal, also known as Spinach Dal, is a delicious and nutritious Indian dish made with lentils and spinach. It’s packed with protein, and vitamins that make it a comforting meal, especially when served with rice or roti.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup split yellow lentils (moong dal or toor dal)
  • 3 cups water
  • 1 cup Spinach Leaves
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 green chilli
  • 1/2 spoon ginger garlic paste
  • 6-7 curry leaves
  • 3-4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1 teaspoon red chilli powder (adjust to taste)
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tablespoon oil 
  • 1 tablespoon ghee
  • Pinch of Hing
  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnish
  • 1/2 lemon

Recipe:

Prepare the Lentils:

  • Rinse the lentils under running water until the water runs clear.
  • In a pressure cooker  combine the lentils, Spinach and water. Add a pinch of turmeric powder and salt. Cook until the lentils are soft and mushy. If using a pressure cooker, cook for about 5-6 whistles. Whistle more if required

 

Prepare the Dal:

  • In a separate pan, heat ghee or oil over medium heat. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter.
  • Add a pinch of hing, 1/2 tablespoon ginger garlic paste, 1 green chilli, 6-7 curry leaves and minced garlic. Sauté for another minute until fragrant.
  • Add chopped onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.
  • Pour in the cooked dal/ spinach puree and mix everything together. Let it simmer for 3-4 minutes.
  • Add turmeric powder, coriander powder, salt, and red chilli powder. Mix well and cook for a couple of minutes.
  • Adjust the consistency by adding water if needed. Check for salt and adjust seasoning accordingly.
  • add 1/2 lemon juice
  • add coriander leaves

 

Garnish and Serve:

Garnish the Palak Dal with freshly chopped coriander leaves.

Serve hot with steamed rice or roti. Enjoy the nutritious Palak Dal.
