Palak Dal, also known as Spinach Dal, is a delicious and nutritious Indian dish made with lentils and spinach. It’s packed with protein, and vitamins that make it a comforting meal, especially when served with rice or roti.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup split yellow lentils (moong dal or toor dal)
- 3 cups water
- 1 cup Spinach Leaves
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 1 green chilli
- 1/2 spoon ginger garlic paste
- 6-7 curry leaves
- 3-4 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon coriander powder
- 1 teaspoon red chilli powder (adjust to taste)
- Salt to taste
- 2 tablespoon oil
- 1 tablespoon ghee
- Pinch of Hing
- Fresh coriander leaves for garnish
- 1/2 lemon
Recipe:
Prepare the Lentils:
- Rinse the lentils under running water until the water runs clear.
- In a pressure cooker combine the lentils, Spinach and water. Add a pinch of turmeric powder and salt. Cook until the lentils are soft and mushy. If using a pressure cooker, cook for about 5-6 whistles. Whistle more if required
Prepare the Dal:
- In a separate pan, heat ghee or oil over medium heat. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter.
- Add a pinch of hing, 1/2 tablespoon ginger garlic paste, 1 green chilli, 6-7 curry leaves and minced garlic. Sauté for another minute until fragrant.
- Add chopped onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.
- Pour in the cooked dal/ spinach puree and mix everything together. Let it simmer for 3-4 minutes.
- Add turmeric powder, coriander powder, salt, and red chilli powder. Mix well and cook for a couple of minutes.
- Adjust the consistency by adding water if needed. Check for salt and adjust seasoning accordingly.

Garnish and Serve:
Garnish the Palak Dal with freshly chopped coriander leaves.
