Perfect Filter Coffee | How to make Filter Coffee at home
Filter coffee, also known as “South Indian Filter Coffee” or “Kaapi,” is a popular and traditional coffee preparation originating from the southern states of India, particularly Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. It is known for its rich flavor, strong aroma, and smooth texture.
Filter coffee has a long history in India and is believed to have originated in the 17th century during the colonial period when coffee was introduced to the region by the British. The brewing method and techniques for making filter coffee were developed by Indian coffee planters and traders.
Filter coffee is particularly famous and beloved in South India, where it is an integral part of the region’s culture and culinary tradition. It is widely consumed in households, cafes, and traditional coffee houses known as “tiffin centers” or “Darshinis.”
Filter coffee is made using a special device called a “coffee filter” or “drip filter,” which consists of two cylindrical cups, one stacked on top of the other. The upper cup contains a perforated base, where ground coffee beans and hot water are added. The lower cup serves as a receptacle for the brewed coffee.
Ingredients:
- Coarsely ground coffee beans / Coffee powder to make filter coffee (preferably a blend of Arabica and Robusta) – Don’t use instant coffee.
- Boiling water
- Fresh milk (full-fat)
- Sugar (optional)
Instructions:
- Add the coffee powder in the upper cup of the filter.
- Use the disc to evenly distribute and gently press the coffee powder.
- Fit the upper cup containing the coffee powder onto the lower cup. Make sure to check if it’s placed properly
- Ensure that the coffee filter is assembled securely to avoid spilling the coffee/ burning your hand
- Now pour boiling water over the coffee powder in the upper cup of the filter until it is filled to the brim.
- Let the coffee brew for about 3-5 minutes. The hot water passes through the coffee powder in the lower cup of the filter machine
- While the coffee is brewing, heat fresh milk in a separate pan until it is hot.
- Add 1/2 teaspoon sugar (if required) in a coffee cup.
- Pour the brewed coffee decoction from the lower cup of the filter into the cup.
- Add hot milk to the cup, filling it to the desired strength and consistency.
- Mix the coffee and milk thoroughly using a small steel container allowing the coffee to froth.
- Enjoy the rich and aromatic South Indian filter coffee!
Filter coffee is a cherished beverage enjoyed by coffee enthusiasts and is an essential part of South Indian hospitality and tradition. If you ever visit any part of South India, Filter coffee is one beverage you must try.
