White rice is a staple in many cuisines and can be enjoyed as a simple and versatile side dish.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup white rice (long-grain, basmati or jasmine)
- 2 cups water
- 1/2 teaspoon salt (optional)
- 1 tablespoon ghee (optional)
Step by step Recipe:
Rinse the Rice:
- Rinse 1 cup rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Rinsing removes excess starch and helps prevent the rice from becoming too sticky.
Soak the Rice (Optional):
- Soaking the rice in water for 15-30 minutes before cooking can help improve its texture and make the grains fluffier. This step is optional but recommended for certain varieties of rice.
Measure the Water:
- For every cup of rice, use 2 cups of water. The ratio of rice to water may vary slightly depending on the type of rice and your personal preference.
Cook the Rice:
- In a pan add rice, water and salt (if using). Add the 1/2 teaspoon ghee.
- Bring the water to a boil over high heat.
Simmer:
- Once the water comes to a boil, reduce the heat to low and cover the saucepan with a tight-fitting lid. Allow the rice to simmer gently for 18-20 minutes, or until all the water has been absorbed and the rice is tender.
- Keep checking in between to avoid the overcooking/ undercooking of rice
Fluff the Rice:
- Once the rice is cooked, remove the pan from the heat and let it sit, covered, for a few minutes to allow the steam to finish cooking the rice.
- After a few minutes, remove the lid and use a fork to gently fluff the rice, separating the grains and releasing any excess steam.
Serve:
- Serve the fluffy white rice as a side dish alongside your favourite main courses, such as curries, stir-fries, grilled meats or vegetable dishes.
- You can also use white rice as a base for dishes like fried rice, rice bowls, adding your choice of lentils, vegetables, and sauces for a complete meal.
