How to Rinse Rice Like a Pro

  • Measure Your Rice: Start by measuring out the amount of rice you want to cook. Whether it’s one cup or five, the rinsing process remains the same.
  • Use a Fine-Mesh Strainer: Grab a fine-mesh strainer or sieve and place it over your sink. Pour the rice into the strainer, and then rinse it under cold water. If you don’t have a strainer at home – cover the pot with a plate/ your hand and slowly tint it in the sink to remove the excess water 
  • Swish and Rinse: Use your hands to gently swish the rice around under the running water. You’ll notice the water turning cloudy as it washes away the starch and impurities.
  • Repeat Until Clear: Keep rinsing and swishing until the water runs clear. This might take three or four rinses, depending on the type of rice you’re using. Ideally rinse it for 2-3 times.
  • Drain Well: Once the water runs clear, let the rice drain in the strainer for a few minutes. You want to get rid of as much excess water as possible before cooking.

Why It Works

Rinsing rice removes excess starch, which is what makes rice sticky when it cooks. By washing away the starch, you’re left with grains that cook up light, separate, and perfectly fluffy.

Example: Making Fluffy Jasmine Rice

Let’s say you’re making a delicious Thai curry and you want fluffy jasmine rice to go with it. Before you start cooking the curry, take a few minutes to rinse your jasmine rice using the steps above. Once it’s rinsed and drained, add it to your rice cooker or pot with the appropriate amount of water, and cook as usual.
